Family "Staycation" Ideas

With the high unemployment rate and harsh economy, more and more families are finding it hard to go on vacation. That is why the new term “staycation” was invented. A staycation is where families visit nearby places that offer just as much fun as any other vacation would, but still stay at home. Staycations can save a bundle of money by not having to rent a hotel room or buy a plane ticket. It is cheap, but still loads of fun!

Living right outside Houston makes staycationing much easier. There is so much to do just in downtown that it would take you more than a month to experience all that Houston has to offer. Almost every night there is either a baseball game, opera, concert, or football game going on. There is rarely a quiet moment. And not everything is expensive. You can visit the Houston zoo for only $10, and certain days you can get in for free!

If Downtown Houston isn’t for you, then you can always go down to Galveston and spend a day at the beach. Moody Gardens offers  so much to see and do. They have three pyramids; the rainforest, aquarium, and discovery pyramids. Along with their fascinating exhibits, they also have Palm beach, an IMAX-3D theater, and a sit down restaurant. Right down from Moody Gardens you can find Schlitterbahn where you can float all day in the lazy river or blast uphill on the Dragon Blaster. Just remember to bring your sunscreen!

Staycations can be a lot of fun if you just think about what our city has to offer us. Many people come to Houston on their vacation because it is so much fun. So why can’t we stay home and enjoy what we have right here? It is fun, exciting, and saves you money!

Thank you for the wonderful ideas! "Staycation" has now officially been added to the English dictionary, and it surely seems like the way to go this summer! In addition to the three pyramids, three theaters and Palm Beach, you can see the summer special exhibit Dinosaurs Alive and summer family entertainment shows too through August. Don't forget to look for the online discounts or pick up coupons at Galveston hotels and visitor centers.
