Beware College Students!

If you have not heard by now, there is a fairly new rule in Texas colleges. If you are an undergraduate student and if you started as a first-time undergraduate at any Texas public community college, four-year college, or university in the fall of 2007 or later, you can’t drop more than six courses during your entire Texas college career. Why do this? It is to help motivate students to complete their classes and finish their degree sooner. After you drop six classes you will not be allowed to drop anymore classes and are required to finish your class, unless you have an exception to the rule.

The Exceptions:
• You withdraw from all classes for the semester
• We drop you for administrative reasons of our own
• You are sick or injured
• You are caring for a sick or injured person
• You have a death in your immediate family
• Your work schedule changes
• You go on active duty service with the U.S. armed forces or Texas National Guard.
• The class was dropped at a private or out of state institution

If you qualify for any of the above exceptions you will most likely need some form of documentation and write a letter to the dean. You will need to check out your schools specific requirements as they change depending on what school you are going to. And remember if you ever need any help you can always visit your school’s counselors. They are there to help!
